American Studies uses the tools of history, literature and criticism, philosophy, folklore, cultural and ethnic studies, anthropology, political science, gender studies, and cultural studies to rip the lids off the texts and narratives of the complex societies we live in and examine the realities within them. We study the way things work and how they perform work – the built environment, fashions, film and the internet, regional cultures and migrations, academia and cultural distinction, hot rods, wars, elections, art, popular music, immigrants and the descendents of immigrants, bestselling novels, racism and nationalism, American Jazz, power structures and countercultures; everything that plays into the complex dynamic of American life.
